Organised around a number of salient themes, The Routledge Companion to Contemporary Painting maps out and critically examines the prevailing tendencies that pertain to painting as they have emerged over approximately the last two decades and within a global context. Within the context of contemporary art, over approximately the last two decades painting has maintained a visible and dynamic presence, however, whilst the abundance of exhibitions is suggestive of the continued viability of and interest in painting, there remains a lack of critical scholarship which seeks to account for its visibility within the broader, more discursive contexts, discourses, and practices that collectively make up art today. The editors of this volume address this gap by bringing together a collection of critical texts that collectively seek to respond to and place into context the practice and theorisation of painting within the new millennium.
