Description

The exhibition this book accompanies is the first major retrospective of the composer and artist in Europe. Ryuichi Sakamoto is regarded as a pioneer of electronic and experimental music who continually redefined the boundaries between sound, film, performance and visual art. Since the 2000s Sakamoto developed three-dimensional sound environments, often in collaboration with international artists such as Shiro Takatani and Carsten Nicolai, as well as the filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Ryuichi Sakamoto | seeing sound, hearing time presents seven works in five large-scale installations and places the intersection of sound and art at its centre, a hallmark of Hamburger Bahnhof since its founding 30 years ago. This is the third edition of a series of publications accompanying major retrospectives of contemporary artists at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart. It comprises a number of new and historical texts on Ryuichi Sakamoto, reproductions of all works exhibited as well as installation shots. Text in English and German.
