A compact survey of work by the renowned Japanese photographer Ishiuchi Miyako. Ishiuchi Miyako (b. 1947) is one of Japan’s most celebrated photographers, known for her evocative explorations of memory, the body, history and the passage of time. A female pioneer in a male-dominated field, Miyako first gained recognition in the 1970s with photographs of her hometown Yokosuka. Her series Apartment and Endless Night established her within Japan’s avant-garde photography scene, while 1947 (1988–1989) challenged conventional ideals of female beauty through photographs of the hands and feet of women born the same year as herself. In Mother’s (2000–2005), she turned to her mother’s aging body, while her acclaimed Frida by Ishiuchi Miyako (2013) similarly explores traces of Frida Kahlo’s life through her clothing, braces and medical equipment.
