Homeric Hymns and Other Homerica
Homeric Hymns and Other Homerica
Description
A collection of hymns, epigrams, and other poems attributed to Homer, presented in the timeless translations of George ChapmanGeorge Chapman’s translations of Homer—immortalized by Keats’s sonnet—are the most famous in the English language. Swinburne praised their “freshness, strength, and inextinguishable fire,” while the great critic George Saintsbury wrote that “Chapman is far nearer Homer than any modern translator in any modern language.” This volume presents the original text of Chapman’s translation of the Homeric hymns. These poems, which are believed to have been written by followers of Homer who emulated his style, celebrate the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek pantheon. Chapman’s collection, originally titled The Crowne of all Homers Workes, also includes epigrams and poems attributed to Homer and known as “The Lesser Homerica,” as well as his famous “The Battle of Frogs and Mice.” The volume features introductions by Allardyce Nicoll and Stephen Scully, commentary, a glossary, and textual notes.
