Description

More employees in today’s organizations are working despite having chronic physical and mental health conditions. This is due to the aging of the workforce, as well as advances in the treatment of many chronic illnesses. Many employees with chronic illnesses are productive employees yet often need accommodations to remain productive. While researchers and many human resource managers have recognized the importance of this growing population of employees, there have been few attempts to systematically summarize this fast-growing research domain and do it in a form that is understandable to researchers, and researchers-in-training, in a variety of academic disciplines. Chronic Illness in the Workplace is designed to provide researchers and researchers-in-training, with a concise yet comprehensive review of contemporary research on chronic illness in the workplace. In addition to summarizing the current research on chronic illness in the workplace, Jex and Dye describe both the theoretical and methodological foundations of this rapidly growing research literature and suggest both future research directions and evidence-based interventions that can support employees with chronic illnesses. Their goal is for this book to be the “go-to” resource for any researcher or researcher-in-training interested in researching chronic illness in the workplace. This book, and the research that it generates, can help change existing stereotypes of employees with chronic illnesses, especially for employees with chronic mental illnesses.
