Amateur

Shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-FictionShortlisted for the Wellcome Book PrizeWhen Thomas Page McBee, a trans man, trains for and fights in a charity boxing match at Madison Square Garden he wants to uncover what makes a man - and what being a 'good' man even means. A self-described amateur in the male world, McBee's journey takes him beyond the boxing gym and the locker room into a wide-ranging exploration of gender, examining the troubled relationship between masculinity, violence and vulnerability. As incisive as when first published in 2018 and ever more urgent today, Amateur is essential reading for those who wish to understand how society shapes men and offers a new vision for what's possible when we look at masculinity with a beginner's mind.
