Darby: high fantasy for big imaginations

This is one for the magic-lovers! These books have stellar world-building, captivating characters, and thrilling plots - plus a dragon or two. Perfect for curling up on the sofa and escaping reality for the night, with a cup of tea in hand and maybe some medieval lofi in the background.

Fourth wing is fun, thrilling, and adventurous. Yaaros does an incredible job with pacing, keeping you turning page after page. It is a bit steamy at times, but for me, it’s the story that stands out.

A Hugo Prize winner and the first of the Broken Earth Trilogy, The Fifth Season is moving and engaging. Jemisin pushes the genre forward by playing around with narration and by using this fantasy world to comment on very real issues, such as race and oppression. She explores themes of power, survival, guilt, and hope.

Written by the bestselling author of the Shadowhunter series, The Sword Catcher is the first in a new series. It follows two characters, each with their own frustrations and desires, as they navigate the complicated politics and mysteries of Castellane. It kept me engaged throughout and left me eager for book 2!

Another story full of magic and adventure, The Name of the Wind is a classic for modern fantasy. It follows the life of Kvothe and how he becomes a legend within his own world. Not only has Rothfuss presented a richly-detailed and brilliantly built-up world, but he also explores intriguing themes, including myth, music, and how moments become stories… and how much truth is retained when they do.

This one deserves a highlight for having such a fascinating world. In The Tiger and the Wolf, people live in very distinct clans, each defined by the animal that those people shapeshift into. Although Maniye grew up in the wolf clan, she also has the ability to shift into a tiger, a legacy she received from her long-dead mother.
