October Round-Up

There are a lot of exciting books coming out soon. Here are our teams top picks recently to check out this October:

Intermezzo by Sally Rooney

I raced through this sensational new novel in days. Rooney gets better and better – this time, she tells the story of two painfully real brothers, whose lives (emotional, physical, sexual) are in different shades of turmoil following the death of their father. A stunning fourth book from our beloved Sally, who appears to be getting more precise with every sentence she writes.

Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout

An Elizabeth Strout novel is an occasion. She writes beautifully and you instantly feel immersed in the communities she creates. In the latest instalment of Lucy Barton's story, we are reunited with Lucy and William who are settled into their new living arrangements post Lucy's move from New York at the start of the Covid lockdown. Her friendship with Bob Burgess is growing and the book features heavily on Bob and his relationships with his wife Margaret and brother, Jim. The infamous Olive Kitteridge, from Strout's previous novels, pops up a lot as Lucy visits her in her care home to share stories on unwritten lives and this is the central theme of the book, that almost everybody lives a remarkable life but not all lives are spoken or written about in the same way.

Denise

The Bone Diver by Angie Spoto

A cosy, gothic story set in coastal Scotland about a seal catcher who discovers that selkies are real. It’s engaging, mysterious, and perfect for reading on a chill, autumnal evening.

The Barn: The Murder of Emmett Till and the Cradle of American Racism by Wright Thompson

Playground by Richard Powers

A wide-sweeping novel covering a behemoth of topics: the ocean, climate change, AI/technology, the psychology of play, colonialism. It switches between several protagonists, each with their own interesting story to tell, while still remaining connected and centred on its themes. Recommended for anyone who wants a novel that will make them think.
