I, the Forgotten by Mohamed Azzedine Tazi is a historical novel about Morocco’s Jewish community in the Fez Mellah. Through the seemingly ageless narrator Shaul Ben ‘Amitha’il Zaz and other community members, it traces centuries of Jewish life while focusing on the upheavals following Israel’s creation and the 1967 Arab–Israeli War. The novel explores migration, fractured families, Muslim–Jewish coexistence, cultural memory, and the painful choice between remaining in Morocco and emigrating to Israel. Ultimately, it portrays a community caught between two homelands—haunted by displacement and longing for the world it left behind.
