This Handbook focuses on the varied ways that a discursive and rhetorical approach can be applied to issues of social justice. The book addresses a number of social (in)justices including sex, gender and sexuality, health, the environment, politics and conflict, social movements, migration and citizenship and racial prejudices. Experts from around the world each address different areas of social injustices, drawing on different approaches under the umbrella of discursive and rhetorical psychology demonstrate the varied ways that social injustices are achieved, justified, supported and sometimes challenged. The collection demonstrates that discursive and rhetorical psychology has matured to a point that its key underpinning argument – that talk performs social actions in social contexts rather than tells us what speakers are ‘really thinking, so that it is most useful to focus on these actions – no longer requires justifying and instead can be applied to the most pressing social issues of the time. The volume will be of interest to students and scholars of social psychology and language, including discursive and rhetorical psychologists, conversation analysts, linguists, sociologists and media scholars.
