The ongoing instability and violence in Iraq, exacerbated by the rise of extremist groups like ISIS, underscore the urgent need for effective peacebuilding. This book is a ground-breaking analysis of the pivotal role that Religious and Ethnic Minority (REM) groups play in peacebuilding within Iraq’s disputed areas. REM groups make up about five to seven percent of Iraq’s population and inhabit disputed areas that are strategically significant. Despite this, they have been historically marginalized and excluded from traditional peace efforts. Moving beyond the traditional portrayal of REM communities as victims, the book showcases their active leadership in fostering inclusive and stable societies. The analysis is based on interviews with leaders from REM communities, civil society actors, governmental representatives and members of NGOs and INGOs, both within and outside Iraq's disputed areas.
