This edited volume explores the enduring impact of Russian imperialism across its former territories. It critically examines the complex interplay between the legacies of tsarist imperialism and Soviet rule and their interpretations in formerly dominated regions. This book analyzes the actualization of the memory of the post-imperial era through the prism of cultural heritage, from material heritage to memory narratives and ways of understanding one’s own past. The contributors focus on practices in the areas neighboring Russia, which were once part of the Russian Empire and are now located in other countries such as Lithuania, Poland, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and the USA (Alaska). The book shows how the seemingly forgotten legacy of tsarist times is used in contemporary narratives about memory, local identity, and practices regarding the material legacy of the times of subordination in a situation where aggression against Ukraine has reignited the discussion about Russian imperialism.
