These are thefascinating personal letters of Wilfred Sydney James Thornington whobecame a senior civil servant and Deputy Director of Audit duringWorld War II. The first batch of letters were sent from New Yorkfrom late 1942 to mid-1943. The second batch were sent from Cairolate 1943 to mid 1945. The final batch were sent in the middle of1953 from Washington DC. These letters capture the wartimeatmosphere both in New York and the Middle East. His contribution tothe Lend Lease programme at the Exchequer Audit Department is coveredtogether with it's importance in World War II and how it worked inpractice.
