{"product_id":"the-inuit-yupik-and-unangax-languages","title":"The Inuit, Yupik, and Unangax Languages","description":"This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the Inuit-Yupik-Unangax language family - previously also known as Eskimo-Aleut, Eskaleut, or Inuit-Yupik-Unangan - whose Arctic homelands stretch from Eastern Siberia to Eastern Greenland. The family has featured prominently in the linguistic literature on issues such as polysynthesis, ergativity, prosody, and the interface between morphology, syntax, and semantics. The chapters in this book make accessible a body of literature fragmented by linguistic boundaries, synthesizing existing work into accessible overviews as well as presenting novel data and research. Part I introduces the main characteristics, origins, and linguistic documentation of the language family, as well as providing maps and speaker estimates for all varieties. It also explores language status, maintenance, and revitalization. Part II consists of grammatical overviews of the major languages and dialect groups: Unangam Tunuu, Sirenik, Central Siberian Yupik, Central Alaskan Yup'ik, Alutiiq, Alaskan Iñupiaq, Western Canadian Inuktun, Eastern Canadian Inuktitut, and Kalaallisut; the only recognized language missing is Naukan, being too sparsely documented to produce a comparative overview. Part III explores topics in phonetics and phonology, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and ethnolinguistics, as well as the historical sources of derivational affixes. It also includes several case studies on different aspects of morphosyntax, especially the use of the antipassive construction across different varieties, and describes the effect of language ideologies on the use of Yupik in two communities. Finally, it contains an in-depth discussion of the position of Sirenik in the family tree.","brand":"Gardners","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57555330367861,"sku":"9780198837930","price":169.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/backstory.london\/products\/the-inuit-yupik-and-unangax-languages","provider":"Backstory","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
