{"product_id":"frontline","title":"Frontline","description":"Victor Wedderburn arrived in the UK from Jamaica in 1971 aged 16 , joining his Windrush Generation parents in Bradford, a post-industrial city in Yorkshire. During the early 80s, a period of soaring unemployment and financial hardship in the UK, Victor lost his job as a lorry driver. With his modest redundancy payout he bought a second-hand camera and colour film developing kit, and set about documenting where he lived - Lumb Lane, colloquially known as “the Frontline” because of the racial hostility faced by its Caribbean residents. Only now being discovered, more than forty years later, Wedderburn’s photographs reveal the Frontline as a place full of activism, music, creativity, style and fashion, bursting with energy and life. Where people of all generations hang out at cafés and hire films from the local video shop; where romance blossomed; where endless football games were won and lost, where men shoot the breeze over a game of pinball, and where cars—Beamers, Ford Capris—a source of pride for their owners are characters in their own right. All unfolding to the beat of sound systems playing reggae, roots and dub. Victor Wedderburn’s images capture an era characterised by resilience, joy and cultural pride. They are a time capsule of everyday life, offering an insider’s view of Bradford’s Frontline as a vibrant African-Caribbean community, where friends and families lived, worked and socialised together.
