In fact, Chaloner Ogle  enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the Royal Navy, rising  to become Admiral of the Fleet. His spectacular career coincided  with the ‘golden age’ of piracy, when trade in the Atlantic and  beyond was threatened by roving bands of sea-robbers. Following  a series of incidents on the African coast, Ogle set his sights on  one particular robber, Bartholomew Roberts, or ‘Black Bart’.  The encounter that ensued is recorded in Captain Charles  Johnson’s A General History of the Pyrates, published in 1724.  Struck by grapeshot, which ripped out his throat, Roberts was  killed in an instant. Ogle, however, was denied the chance  to capture the pirate when Roberts’s crew threw his corpse  overboard. The body was never recovered. The crew, however,  suff ered fates that befell many captured pirates: some were  hanged, others were sentenced to indentured labour, practically  a life sentence in itself.  While the exact details of how the coconut cup at the centre of  this publication came to be made are unknown, it is a tantalising  link to this period of history. The object will be on display during  a major new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum from  spring 2025 to early 2026.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Gardners","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":56303298183541,"sku":"9781739154240","price":12.99,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0612\/7193\/3106\/files\/9781739154240_4d9e15ad-a224-49a3-8253-8bac4918e786.jpg?v=1786024515"},{"product_id":"9781739154288","title":"Buried Treasure","description":"Buried Treasure is a light-hearted look at some of the most feared men and women who sailed the seas. It captures both the drama of a pivotal moment in Britain's history - the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 - and the majesty of the Tudor monarchy. But while the image it presents is one of assuredness, success and might, the portrait both overstates English power and downplays the real dangers the Armada presented to England and its queen. By understanding the portrait and its symbolism, the history of the Armada and the turbulent Elizabethan age come to life.","brand":"Gardners","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":56308314079605,"sku":"9781906367688","price":12.99,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0612\/7193\/3106\/files\/9781906367688_ec1432d0-8389-4f18-8732-8fa228835118.jpg?v=1786029631"}],"url":"https:\/\/backstory.london\/collections\/author-robert-blyth.oembed","provider":"Backstory","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
