Oeri konnte sich auf kein abgeschlossenes Manuskript stützen. Zwar lag ihm von den ersten beiden Bänden eine Reinschrift vor, doch war dieser eine Reihe von Ergänzungen beigegeben, so daß Oeri selbst eine letzte Überarbeitung vornehmen mußte. Für die Bände 3 und 4 lag lediglich ein Kolleg-Manuskript und eine Kolleg-Mitschrift vor. - Der hier wiedergegebene Text stützt sich auf die von Felix Staehelin herausgegebene kritische Jacob-Burckhardt-Gesamtausgabe. Staehelin verglich die Manuskripte mit der von Max Oeri hergestellten Textfassung und konnte dabei einige Lesefehler Oeris richtigstellen, die hier als Anmerkungen angeführt werden. Sie erscheinen als Endnoten mit einem vorangestellten A. Wurden von Staehlin Verbesserungen in den Fußnoten vorgenommen, steht der alte Oerische Text in eckigen Klammern dahinter.
