It gives a detailed account of the tripartite divisions into 'three types of child' that were sanctioned in the reforms of the 1940s. At the same time, it also emphasises the idea of education as a civic project which underlay the reforms and which was such an important part of their lasting authority.

The education policies of the past decade and the current attempts to shape a new education settlement need to be interpreted in a long-term historical framework and in particular, in relation to the aims and problems of the last great cycle of reform in the 1940s. This book makes an important contribution to the development of such a framework and the social history of education policy in this country.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9780713040197_918d41cf-65d0-48ec-b1fc-e37c70b564f1.jpg?v=1786015129
the-secondary-technical-school
The Secondary Technical School
Originally published in 1989, Gary McCulloch’s work provided an elegant and pointed answer to the plea for more historical study in the curriculum domain. He focuses on a fascinating episode in the long history of vocationalism in Britain – the Secondary Technical School. In undertaking this historical scholarship, he has avowedly and specifically related this study to new developments in Thatcher’s Britain – notably the Technical and Vocational Education Initiative and the city technical colleges. He poses an important question: does earlier experiment of the Secondary Technical School provide us with a ‘usable past’ as we define policy in the present?The book’s purpose was two-fold. First, it offers a full-length history of the technical schools in their own time and context. Second, it illuminates recent contemporary policy initiatives. The latter aim operates at the cutting edge of political hopefulness. Much of the policy formulation during the Thatcher period had shown a deliberate, almost wilful, ignorance of the history. Hence, in saying of the book, ‘the history … will have explanatory leverage on policy as developed over the past decade’, McCulloch strikes the most optimistic stance possible in the circumstances. But as in so many areas of cultural policy, we should not fall victim to top-down philistinism, or to fatalism. It is to McCulloch’s credit that his approach and his scholarship lead us firmly in the direction of policies based on historical understanding, not contemporary ignorance. Today it can be read in its historical context.
Originally published in 1985, this is a study in the politics of the school curriculum. It explores the efforts which had been made since 1945 to adapt school science in England and Wales to the needs and opportunities of the so-called ‘technological revolution’. These endeavours had been strongly influenced by changing social and political concerns at the national level, and were stimulated by a continuing debate about the nature of the relationships between science and technology at the time. The book examines the role of science teaching associations and the post-war secondary technical schools in curriculum change, and assesses the importance not only of such agencies as the DES, the Schools Council and the Manpower Services Commission but also of interest groups related to industry, engineering and professional science. The changing situation since the opening of the Great Debate on education in 1976 is described in detail. The book also considers the impact and significance of recent curriculum initiatives and examines the prospects for future reform. Today it can be read in its historical context.
