Within the city of Lincoln, factories such as Clayton & Shuttleworth, William Foster & Co., Robey & Co. and Rustons employed just about every man of working age as they grew from humble blacksmith beginnings to producers of agricultural machinery renowned around the world.

In August 1914 the nation’s factories were put on an emergency war footing and the county’s agricultural engineers saw a huge change from producing traction engines, ploughs and threshing machines to the creation of tanks and aircraft.

Beyond the factories, fenlands in the south-east of the county required a huge network of deep drains and pumping stations to keep incoming tides at bay while the fertile farming land produced crops that needed processing and moving to market. The power harnessed from wind and water to produce grain that fed the local population has left a legacy of some wonderful windmills and watermills to explore. The discovery, quarrying and mining of ironstone in turn led to industrialisation on the banks of the Humber, still a hive of industry today.

With a wealth of interesting images and fascinating captions, Lincolnshire Industrial Heritage celebrates this unheralded part of the county’s history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781445688466_e17f4803-50b2-4361-8fbf-906d0e6f8641.jpg?v=1786020550
9781445678412
Aveling & Porter
An eminent early preservationist, John Crawley was able to amass an enviable photographic archive of steam traction engines and road rollers in their working days, of which this Aveling & Porter selection formed just a part. Organiser of over eighty steam rallies, John saved up to thirty steam traction engines for preservation from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, at a time when they were considered not much more than worthless scrap. Indeed, he became the first owner of no fewer than twenty-two of them.Utilising this incredible and unique collection of images, most of which are previously unpublished, Colin Tyson tells the story of this important manufacturer and iconic British brand.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781445678412_3b977839-805c-4257-9a3c-c876fbb73efe.jpg?v=1786020406
9781398119666
When Steam Ruled the Roads

The period between the late 1800s and the late 1920s was the heyday of the road steam traction engine. Prior to that, ‘portable’ steam engines were pulled by horses from farm to farm to provide the power unit for belting to machinery for tasks such as the annual threshing. The invention of the self-moving traction engine brought many advances, always staying one jump ahead of amendments to the Locomotive Acts. Fairground operators hauled their huge road train of rides to the next fair; ploughing engines and threshing engines travelled from farm to farm; road hauliers carried huge loads; and steam rollers laid and mended the roads. The availability of cheap surplus First World War petrol vehicles saw road hauliers and fairground showmen dispense with the ‘hassle’ of operating steam vehicles, yet there were still manufacturers making steam wagons until the late 1930s and several councils carried on operating true steam rollers right into the 1960s.

Colin Tyson presents a vibrant selection of images celebrating traction engines in all their many and varied forms when ‘steam ruled the roads’.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781398119666_7246c875-292f-4bba-9863-4ea3c3100b0d.jpg?v=1786018162
sussex-industrial-heritage
Sussex Industrial Heritage
At first glance the largely rural county of ‘Sussex by the Sea’ may not be the first to spring to mind when it comes to the subject of industrial heritage, but closer inspection reveals that it had its fair share of extractive industries, such as early chalk quarries and lime works, thanks to the geology of the Sussex Downland, and from the interior Wealden Clays came brickworks and iron forges and furnaces.At first goods moved on early turnpikes and by long-closed canals. Sussex was later at the forefront of transport developments, pioneering the world’s oldest electric railway and the world’s first air terminal building. Coastal fishing villages developed into large bathing resorts upon the arrival of the railways from London. The county has its fair share of surviving windmills and watermills from a more rural industrial past, as well as the ‘cathedrals of steam’ – the water treatment pumping stations, built to meet the needs of growing towns.This book outlines the important place that Sussex trades held in the economy of southern England, and illustrates what remains to be seen today of past industries in what is now essentially a post-industrial era.
