At the dawn of the decade it was still possible to travel on a Sundays-only St Pancras to Manchester Piccadilly service that traversed the Woodhead route, or catch a Deltic-hauled express from York to London King’s Cross. The 1980 edition of Ian Allan’s Motive Power Combined Volume listed more than 3,700 diesel and electric locomotives. Slowly but surely over the following ten years, these familiar sights would begin to disappear. The Woodhead route and its twenty-seven-year-old fluorescent-lit tunnel was closed, the Deltics withdrawn, and hundreds of other diesel and electric locomotives taken out of service – most to be scrapped, with a precious few preserved. The first generation diesel multiple units began to be phased out and a new breed, the ‘Sprinter’, began to appear.This book presents a collection of photographs of the motive power that characterised this decade of change, many featuring locations and infrastructure that, like the machines themselves, have gone forever.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781398109223_53b104e6-e458-4ea0-a8a8-0097a318bee3.jpg?v=1786018566
9781445657370
Class 37 Locomotives
Well-proportioned, versatile, aesthetic, durable – the English Electric Class 37, the great survivor of the modernisation-plan diesel fleet, deserves all of these accolades and more. Never as celebrated as the Deltics, never as idolised as the Westerns, always intended to be a workhorse; this is the locomotive that has, in many ways, surpassed its more illustrious peers as an example of all that is best in motive power design and engineering.This pictorial collection contains nearly 200 photographs of one of the best loved of diesel types, compiled by Andrew Walker with contributions from other photographers who, like him, have always been drawn to these great British locomotives. The Class 37s always roamed far and wide over the national network, and this book covers locations ranging from the Scottish Highlands to South Wales, showing the 37s on freight and passenger duties, at depots and in works.Showcasing images from the 1970s through to the present day, the book provides detailed captions with in-depth technical specifications and information on the individual locos, their history and operation in traffic, and features many of the class variants and their liveries over the decades.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781445657370_e61a4451-45e4-4fae-84ba-9933c9570842.jpg?v=1786020870
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781837917242_aae51c0b-677c-442e-b786-87be6cb06bcb.jpg?v=1786028136
9781445698281
South Yorkshire Railways
Coal and iron making first brought railways to what is now called South Yorkshire. The industrial towns of Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster attracted the Victorian pioneers, who built a myriad of often competing lines to the collieries and factories. The carriage of people was almost an afterthought, but once there was demonstrable demand, the passenger routes followed, linking the growing centres of population and connecting with the major cities in adjoining counties and further afield. Perhaps most historically of all, the immense challenge of piercing the Pennines at Woodhead was met with the construction of the Great Central’s line from Sheffield to Manchester, later famously electrified and then regrettably closed.This photographic collection presents a selection of images from across this diverse county from the 1970s to the present day, from the dying days of the pits to the era of the internet-enabled trains of the twenty-first century. Many of these pictures feature infrastructure and locations that have long since disappeared from the railway map.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/7193/3106/files/9781445698281_ffe46053-db8a-4fa3-9cdf-fea869668511.jpg?v=1786020700
diesels-at-doncaster
Diesels at Doncaster
For many people, Doncaster will always be a railway town. Its association with locomotive building and with the prestige express trains of the East Coast Main Line goes back over 150 years, its name synonymous with the Flying Scotsman, the Elizabethan, and the Talisman – proud flag-bearers for the Great Northern Railway and later the LNER. Its attraction for railway enthusiasts and photographers hardly requires explanation; suffice it to say that even in the post-steam era, it was the place to be for anyone keen to see a daily cavalcade of varied diesel power with the bonus of non-stop trains travelling at speed to and from the capital. From shunters and DMUs to the mighty Deltics, and from unfortunate candidates for scrapping to immaculate ‘ex-works’ examples fresh from the nearby ‘Plant ’, there always seemed to be something happening at Doncaster.In this pictorial collection, photographers Andrew and John Walker have compiled a selection of nearly two hundred images from the 1970s and 80s to the present day, illustrating this diversity. The book focuses on diesel traction in the pre-electrification era, though later images represent the Doncaster of the twenty-first century, sadly now without its famous locomotive works but still a strategic and important junction on the national network.
What if one ingredient could transform your entire baking?In GINGER: Building the Gingerbread Bakery, Andrew Walker takes a single, distinctive ingredient and reveals its full potential - guiding you from fresh ginger root to a complete repertoire of flavours, techniques and recipes. Walker’s Thought-Provoking Look at Modern Culture Affirms Why Biblical Morality Is Urgent and Irreplaceable We have forgotten what it means to be human. American men and women are feeling the despair of a counterfeit culture, one where polarization has replaced conversation, pornography is chosen over true intimacy, and marriage and family are postponed indefinitely. The resulting isolation has forced us to confront the truth: individualism and worldly systems cannot take the place of God’s design for humanity. This scholarly yet accessible study examines the effects of secularism, nihilism, and barbarism on culture today, and explains why a biblical worldview is essential for human flourishing. Andrew T. Walker skillfully confronts 10 pressing issues—including loneliness, sexual confusion, anti-institutionalism, and identity. Affirming that shared norms grounded in creation order are the solution to social decline, he champions a return to biblical standards of freedom, human nature, and purpose. Walker compares Western culture to the prodigal son in Scripture—a culture that has squandered its inheritance and must now decide whether it will return to the Father or continue living in squalor. Essential Guide to Cultural Apologetics: Presents biblical ethics as the remedy for various personal, social, and existential crises affecting men and women today Comprehensive: Offers cultural insights and research on topics including marriage and family, gender identity, pornography, social and political division, and more Written by Andrew T. As European powers expanded their presence in Southeast Asia at the end of the nineteenth century, Siam launched its own colonial project to assert control over tributary states that lay outside the Siamese heartland. Most important was Lanna (now northern Thailand), a region where Siamese, British, and French colonial ambitions intersected. The outbreak of the Shan rebellion in 1902 began with the violent dismantling of the Siamese colonial administration in Phrae, one of Lanna's principal towns. As the rebels began moving towards other centres, they tested the limits of Siamese power in Lanna. With the British having valuable commercial interests to protect and the French itching for an opportunity to expand their reach, Siam's colonial project faced a dangerous moment. Drawing on rich archival sources from Thailand, Burma, India, France and England, this outstanding study provides the first detailed account of the rebellion and its impact on competitive colonialism in mainland Southeast Asia.
